According to the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences, the benefits of fluoridation remain questionable, however the negatives are apparent; "Fluoride damages brain development and leads to significantly lower IQ levels in humans."
Some would label Fluoride a silent killer, and some would swear by it for its properties that make your teeth shine. Fluorides ability to combat dental decay was initially seen as the main plus point of Fluoridation, but has now become the true tell tale sign that you could be ingesting far too much of the substance. Dental fluorosis is recognized by scientists worldwide as the first clinical sign of fluoride poisoning.
As discussed in Removing Fluoride from Our Water: What's the Fuss? Part 1, Fluoridation is an ongoing topic of controversy, having been banned or opted against by roughly 95% of the world's population.
With so many communities opting out of Fluoridation, in Part 2 of this series we take a look at the effects of Fluoride in your drinking water as well as the rising trend of the banning of Fluoride in public water supplies.
Deadly or, kind of bad?
According to Steve Meyerowitz book Water the Ultimate Cure independent studies have shown that fluoride is implicated in:
• Skin eruptions
• Gastric distress
• Immune System problems
• Downs Syndrome (genetic damage)
• Breakdown of collagen protein
• Heart problems
In their book Fluoridation: The Great Dilemma, Dr's Waldbott, Burgstahler and McJinney add to the list:
• Kidney disease
• Hormonal imbalance
• Lowered enzyme activity
• Reduced fertility
• Birth defects
• Osteoporosis (skeletal flourosis)
• Dental fluorosis
Rise in Fluoride Ban
Most of Continental Europe has rejected, ceased or banned water fluoridation with bans spanning across Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, and West Germany; a total ban of roughly 99% of Western Continental Europe due to environmental, health, legal, or ethical concerns.
However, Fluoride is still being used in the U.S.A., Australia and New Zealand and the United Kingdom. As mentioned in Part One, this accounts for only about 5% of the World's population, more than half accounted for by North America.
According to Fluoridation.com, through out history, individuals in positions of power have been recommending against the use of Fluoridation. In 1977 the Danish Minister of Environment advised against Fluoridation because, "No adequate studies had been carried out on its long-term effects on human organ systems other than teeth and because not enough studies had been done on the effects of fluoride discharges on freshwater ecosystems. In 1978, the West German Association of Gas & Water Experts rejected fluoridation for legal reasons and because 'the so-called optimal fluoride concentration of 1 mg per L is close to the dose at which long-term damage [to the human body] is to be expected."
It has been argued that water fluoridation is costly, causes health problems, and the dosages can not be precisely controlled. It is also argued that instead of using Fluoride to combat dental issues, you should rather control your intake of Sugar, as is it more likely to decide whether or not that you will have tooth decay.
Dr.Burk, a former head of National Cancer Institute Research, stated in a 1970's interview in Holland that, based on his most current research at the time, Fluoridation should have ceased following his studies. Dr.Burk conducted research that showed a significant increase in total deaths over a period of time in a city that was fluoridated, in comparison to a city that did not receive fluoridation.
In Dr. Dean Burk's own words; "...this amounts to public murder on a grand scale, it is a public crime, it would be, to put fluoride in the drinking water of people."
